2003 Year Highlights
By Wanda Ray
January 2003 – Flight #9
met at the home of Odell Allbritten for pizza, salad, and a special cake
& ice cream to celebrate Odell’s birthday. The club sent a check for $25
for the 50th wedding celebration of Donna & Ray Horning (our
international leaders). Dave & Martha Sue Peters have a 30ft. Jayco
Eagle.
February 2003 – The RV Show at the Executive Inn, in Paducah was
the site for our February meeting. Faye & Gene Burden have spent the
night in their own driveway, they can’t wait until camping season.!!!
March 2003 – Natchez Trace State Park in TN served for our first
campout of the year. Dale seemed to have some trouble in finding the
campground and “went where not other trailer had gone before”. Jan would
love to forget that….even the Ranger ‘turned his head away’ in wonder.
Visits to Wal-mart, and a tour of the Shiloh- a Civil War Battlefield
was some of the highlights. At the meeting, there was “LOTS of
discussion” on everything we discussed. Things like,…sending men a tool
instead of flowers.- didn’t go over too well because there were more
ladies voting than men. But Dave Peters did become “king of the picnic
table”…just ask him about it.
April 2003 – The Canal in the LBL - The Quilt Show in Paducah,
fishing, and shopping kept us all busy. Many of us wondered just how
many men does it take to fix Dale’s suburban – and just want was really
wrong. Oh well, men just love machines.
May 2003 – Queen’s Casino Campground in East St. Louis, IL was
the site for the May meeting of Flight #9. Dale noticed a large
motorhome with a Jayco license plate in the front window and suggested
that they paint over the Monaco sign with a Jayco sign. A few members
decided to tour downtown St. Louis with their campers in tow. After this
the Taylors’ & Ryans’ will not need to go with their campers. What would
we do without some excitement!
June 2003 – KY Dam Village State Park – Bi-yearly Rally time. A
very busy weekend. Roger Youngblood sent several new units for display.
John Haley stopped and offered to pull one over for them and ended up
BUYING a new Kiwi without Cynthia knowing it. He “asked” all available
‘friends’ to be there when Cynthia arrived later that day! She couldn’t
kill him while we were all standing there. After the shock, she seemed
to like it real well. We had 20 visiting units with us. BBQ from Larry,
Darrel, & Darrel served by the ‘Jayco Mamas’. Followed by the ladies &
gentleman’s Kitchen Band. We had marshmallow golf, wagon parking, bottle
fishing, face painting, turtle racing, washers & horseshoe pitching, and
scrap booking classes.
July 2003 – Hot July found us at Piney Campground in LBL. Several
visited Fort Donnellson in Dover, TN. Some went on a pontoon boat that
Dave Peters borrowed from a friend. John Haley had a real ‘swimming
experience’. Looked more like diving to me. Some people are just
lucky!!! So it was back to the Cherokee Hills Steak House for supper.
August 2003 – Canal Campground in LBL had lots of rain most of
the weekend. Saturday evening we gathered around the FAN and played a
game of “Catch Phrase”. This brought much laughter as well as some
interesting phrases……especially ones from Randy Knight. If you want to
know more, you will have to ask him.!!!! Later, we pitted the men
against the women in a game of Catch Phrase, and guess who won – we
really lost count.
September 2003 – Ferne Clyffe State Park in IL was a little rainy, but
who notices! Kaye Fraiser joined our club….welcome Kaye. A campfire felt
good this time. There were 49 people at our Saturday night supper
----even ice cream.
October 2003 – Halloween time again at Hillman Ferry in the LBL.
Weather was windy and damp, but a huge group came anyway. The regular
minutes list all the attendees and all the winners of the various
contests. It would take 2 pages to list them all. So you see there was
good participation. Only one campout left for the year!!!!!
November 2003 – Two Rivers Campground, Nashville, TN was the
‘temporary ‘ stopping place for the group since this is the SHOPPING
trip. We gained new members, the John Rices’ from KY. Shopping and
eating was the main activity.
December 2003 – Ended with a get-together at First Baptist in
Metropolis. Food, Food, and more food. Gift were passed around each time
Deirdre Allbritten read the word RIGHT or LEFT in a poem she had. What a
challenge!!! Some had a difficult time remembering their Left from their
Right. End of 2003 Year.
